DISORDERS OF CARBOHYDRATE METABOLISM IN CLINICAL PRACTICE
Keywords:

This article examines the possibilities for the timely and accurate diagnosis of carbohydrate metabolism disorders in clinical practice. Given the prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM), the rapid development of complications, the significant number of undiagnosed cases, and concerning projections regarding the future spread of the disease, the importance of early diagnosis of carbohydrate metabolism disorders is emphasized. Definitions and current 2017 guidelines from the American Diabetes Association regarding diagnostic criteria for impaired fasting glucose, impaired glucose tolerance, and diabetes mellitus are presented. The significance of insulin resistance and the functional status of pancreatic beta-cells in predicting the course and determining the duration of type 2 diabetes mellitus is highlighted. An examination plan for individuals with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus is provided.
